Environmental Rehabilitation
Restore land and water.
Create lasting environmental and economic value.
Envotec helps governments, mining and industrial companies develop integrated programmes to address contamination, restore ecosystems and establish sustainable uses for affected sites. We bring rehabilitation expertise, commercial and technical project development and renewable energy together to turn complex environmental challenges into a practical plan for action.
Introduction
One coordinated programme for a complex site
Contamination can extend from industrial processing and mine workings and tailings into soils, groundwater and waterways.
Envotec develops and integrates rehabilitation programmes, bringing together engineering, water treatment, ecological restoration and the power infrastructure needed to support delivery.

Scope
Control pollution at its source
Identify ongoing releases and prioritise measures to intercept contaminated drainage, manage hazardous materials and address erosion or instability. Source control helps protect the value of subsequent treatment and restoration work.
Treat water and manage mine waste
Assess pit lakes, groundwater, surface water, tailings and contaminated sediments. Select treatment and management options for the site’s chemistry, flow conditions and environmental objectives, with testing before wider deployment.
Restore land and living systems
Rebuild soil function, stabilise landforms and support the recovery of waterways, wetlands and native vegetation. Restoration plans reflect local ecological conditions and the intended future use of the land.
Integrate power and productive future uses
Assess renewable power, storage and appropriate backup to support treatment, pumping and other site operations. Plan compatible opportunities for water infrastructure, resource recovery and local enterprise alongside rehabilitation, with each option tested against site conditions and commercial feasibility.

Technical Approach
Evidence before scale
Technical detail
Water treatment matched to the site
Acid mine drainage and metal contamination require a treatment sequence suited to the actual water chemistry. Options may include pH adjustment, solids separation and polishing. Activated carbon or other adsorption media are considered where testing confirms suitability. Treatment planning also addresses the safe management of residual solids and spent media.
Delivery process
A phased route to rehabilitation
Each stage develops the evidence and scope needed for the next, with priorities, budgets and responsibilities agreed for the site. Urgent risk controls can proceed alongside longer-term assessment and planning.
01
Understand the site
Review available records, establish environmental baselines and assess risks. Agree priorities and identify the studies needed to develop a practical rehabilitation programme.
02
Control immediate risks
Prioritise measures to limit ongoing pollution and address the most urgent site hazards, coordinated with the responsible authorities and site owner.
03
Validate the approach
Use treatment studies, pilots and field trials to test performance and operating requirements before committing to full-scale works.
04
Deliver in phases
Integrate specialist work packages for remediation, ecological restoration and supporting power infrastructure. Envotec coordinates delivery or undertakes engineering, construction and operation under the agreed project scope, with monitoring and progress reporting throughout.
05
Maintain and adapt
Monitor outcomes, maintain treatment and control systems, and adjust interventions where needed. Plan for local operating capability and long-term stewardship.
Performance
Measure progress against the baseline
Define success at the outset and track it through the programme. Reporting should show progress against agreed objectives and where further action is needed.
Engagement
Plan with the people who know the place
Engage authorities, site owners, affected communities and other relevant stakeholders early. Local knowledge helps shape priorities, restoration objectives and future land uses.
Clear responsibilities and regular communication support informed decisions throughout the programme.

Future Site Use
Rehabilitation with a long-term purpose
Reliable power is part of making rehabilitation work. We assess renewable energy and storage against treatment loads and operating requirements, while exploring how suitable land and infrastructure could support future water services, resource recovery and local enterprise.
This connects environmental recovery with Envotec’s wider energy and circular-economy offering from the planning stage.

Commercial Planning
Explore natural capital and financing opportunities
We help structure phased investment plans and assess opportunities linked to natural capital the value of healthy ecosystems including eligible carbon credits. Where suitable coastal ecosystems are involved, blue carbon opportunities may also be assessed.
These pathways depend on site eligibility, credible baselines, applicable standards, verification and market demand; they complement project funding rather than guarantee it.
